This series contains material relating to the sketchbooks, as well as some general research on the life and works of Reynolds, and includes:

In the early 1970s, Hayes began a research project concerning Reynolds' various sketchbooks which were held in public and private collections. He collected photographs of many of these sketchbooks, creating a small library of images which, in many cases, recreate the original volumes page for page.
In 2001, he approached the Paul Mellon Centre to propose a book documenting the sketchbooks but was unable to secure interest in the project. It is uncertain whether he pursued options for the project elsewhere but his research was never published.
