This series contains material collected and compiled by Hayes while researching the life and works of Gainsborough for various projects, and includes:

Hayes and Sutherland developed a working relationship and friendship during Hayes' time at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG). They worked together on an exhibition of Sutherland's portraits in 1977 (see: Hayes, J. and National Portrait Gallery (1977) Portraits by Graham Sutherland. London: National Portrait Gallery. [a copy is available in the Paul Mellon Centre Library, see URL below]). Soon after this, Hayes began working on a monograph about Sutherland for Phaidon (see: JTH/2/5) which was published in 1980, just months after Sutherland's death. Throughout both of these projects the two corresponded frequently, and Sutherland provided Hayes with insight into his life and work.
Hayes continued to be an important voice in the scholarship around Sutherland's work, and he delivered lectures on him frequently. He was also involved in the 1982 exhibition of Sutherland's work at the Tate.
