|LETTERS: John Williams Hughes to his parents when he went to Spain during the Spanish Civil War under the auspices of the Spanish Medical Aid Committee with an ambulance he had helped fundraise for and [led the Welsh Ambulance Unit] there. He also broadcast and wrote articles. He describes the journey, scenery, food and living conditions. Megan [Lloyd George] had put a plaque on the ambulance in the House of Commons. The hospital was at Bencasin and he talks of the wounded and men. He was mainly at Barcelona, Cuenca and Madrid and Valencia and describes eating much fruit from the trees and says that much of it is rotting on the trees as the packing factories were closed. Valencia was bombed and he briefly mentions this. While there he was collecting material for a touring exhibition which began at the Eisteddfod. He saw gypsies with 2 bears just like he had seen in Marian[glas]. His father was Captain of vessels in the Jersey trade for part of the year.Also progamme of lectures in Cardiff 1937-1938 including a lecture by John Williams Hughes 'What I Saw in Spain'
The letters are in Welsh and English because letters had to be written in English to pass the censor.
