Papers and Photographs: Letters by John Williams Hughes from Spain during the Spanish Civil War, 1937; letters to his parents from America and Canada, 1938 - 1941; papers relating to tours of North America, 1941 - 1943; papers relating to work for the Liberal Party, 1953 - 1958; letters from other people including Megan Lloyd George and Aeronwy Thomas; newspaper cuttings about his tour of Rhodesia, 1970; photographs; information relating to the writer and the Spanish civil war acquired for the compilation of this catalogue.

John Williams Hughes was a broadcaster and writer from Marianglas in Anglesey and was born in 1906. He worked with the Welsh ambulance unit in Spain during the Spanish civil war and served in the Middle East and India during the Second World War. After the war he travelled widely and lectured annually in North America and became well known among Welsh societies. He contributed articles to newspapers, a collection of which were published under the title "The Dangerous Years” and broadcast talks about America on radio and television. He stood twice as a Liberal candidate at General Elections, on one occasion for Anglesey. He died in Bangor in March 1977.
