Administrative / Biographical History

Prestatyn Urban District Council (UDC), Flintshire, was established in 1896 under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894. The Council comprised councillors and a chairman, elected for three years. UDCs originally took over responsibility for local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities and their responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor, Rating Officer and Sanitary Inspector. Prestatyn UDC was abolished in 1974 following local government reorganisation, being absorbed into Rhuddlan Borough Council. Prestatyn was formerly part of the parish of Meliden. In 1934, the parish of Meliden was added to the Urban District along with part of the parish of Llanasa.
