Mary Doreen Graham-Pole was born in High Bickington, Devon, on Christmas Day 1936. She lived in Devon until leaving for St Bart's Hospital in London to train as a nurse from 1955-1959. After this, she went to York Hospital as a pupil midwife, 1959-1960. She continued there as an Orthopedic Staff Nurse until 1962, then trained as a health visitor at Leeds University until 1963.
During this time she married Michael Albert Hymas and settled in Harrogate to bring up their three children, and worked as a company director of his family's business, Albert Hymas Ltd, a role she kept until her death.
From 1975-1985 she trained and practiced as a counsellor for Relate, a relationship counselling service. In 1980, she also obtained an English Literature Degree from the Open University. In 1985 she founded and ran Topic, a nationwide post-raid counselling service for building society staff, in which role she continued until 1995.
Michael died in 2003 and she remarried in 2007, living in both Harrogate and Lincolnshire where her second husband's home was, until, after a short illness, she died in 2021.

The casebook was gifted to the Borthwick Institute in 2022 by the daughter of Mrs Graham-Pole.
