Scope and Content

One box containing biographical materials relating to Richard Viney, the first Englishman formally to join the Moravians, among which are; 

  • Nos 11-37: copies of his correspondence (1740-1744), including a letter to Zinzendorf (29 May 1740), two letters to and three letters from Spangenberg (1743) and twelve letters to Br. John Töltschig (1741-1743);
  • Nos 38-47: copies of correspondence (1742-1745) between various brethren, notably Spangenberg, Töltschig and William Holland, in which Viney is mentioned;
  • No. 48: relevant extracts from Töltschig's Official Diary, 1743-1746;
  • Nos 49-81: correspondence of Rev. J.N. Libbey with various scholars in England and at Herrnhut relating to Viney and his Diary.
