Administrative / Biographical History

Under the Education Act 1902, powers were transferred from school boards to local education authorities, which administered schools in groups run by specially appointed boards. These new Local Education Authorities (LEAs) were given powers to establish new secondary and technical schools as well as developing the existing system of elementary schools. The committee comprised councillors and a chairman. It was administered by a number of subcommittees and by appointed officers including Medical Officer, Clerk, and Attendance Officers. Education authorities were abolished in 1944 under the provisions of Butler's Education Act. They were replaced by divisional executives.
