Her sister Ilse loves hearing about Newnham 'though she will never commit herself to approve of the higher education of women'. Her father makes satisfactory progress. Her friend's intellectual raptures such a refreshing change from raving on about officers and other people's clothes, which is all she hears. She is studying Italian but thinks Anglo-Saxon a waste of time.
