Scope and Content

Letters from Ruskin as follows:

  • (a) numbers 1-34 (1857-1873), to R.N. Wornum, Keeper of the National Gallery;
  • (b) numbers 35-81 (1874-1887), to Henry Jowett, manager of Messrs Hazell, Watson & Viney's printing works;
  • (c) number 82 (1885), to Arthur Browning;
  • (d) number 83-89 (1874-87), to Henry Jowett.
 Numbers 1-82 are tipped into the volume; numbers 83-89 are loose, enclosed in an envelope within the volume. The consecutive numbering suggests a common provenance.

The volume containing numbers 1-82 was purchased by the John Rylands Library from Emily Driscoll of New York, dealer in autographs and manuscripts, in September 1959. Numbers 83-89 were acquired from the same source in October 1959.
