Scope and Content

An artificial series consisting of publications and documents relating to pre-Owens efforts to establish a Manchester University. Includes pamphlets by William Whatton (1829) and Harry Longueville Jones (1836) proposing schemes for the university, together with the surviving records of the committee established in the wake of Jones' paper which tried to implement a scheme for a university. This campaign ended without success in late 1837. The series also includes pamphlet from the 1880s on the proposal to establish a university at Manchester in the 1640s.
