The Huddersfield Record of Events recalls that an altar was first set up at 2, Spring Street in July 1873 where members met for a dozen years, excepting the period 1880-82 when they used a cheaper premises in Page Street, off Queen Street South. Early recruitment was slow, partly due to perceptions they were linked with either the Temperance movement or the previous Mormon occupiers of their room. In 1885 they moved to a church in South Street and prospered, gaining independence from Bradford in 1893, and overseeing the dependencies of Halifax and Brighouse.
