Administrative / Biographical History

The records are relating to Port Talbot District Council. A two-tier system was created by the Local Government Act 1972. Counties were controlling the major public services. In West Glamorgan there were four districts created: Swansea, Lliw Valley, Neath and Avan. Conurbations were able to petition for borough status under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972. The new distric councils of Lliw Valley, Neath and Afan became boroughs. Afan changed its name to Port Talbot. In 1996, district councils were abolished and unitary authorities were created, and Port Talbot Borough became part of the County Borough of Neath Port Talbot.
