Administrative / Biographical History

In October 2013 descendants of Violet Van der Elst's brother, Samuel Dodge, visited Harlaxton Manor. This collection includes photographs of the visit and a Dodge family tree.

Samuel Dodge was a master baker on the Clan McNaughton steamship which was converted to an armed ship during the 1st World War. Unfortunately the ship left Liverpool in 1915 and was never heard of again. The accepted theory was that the addition of weaponry made the ship top heavy which went down in a storm somewhere in the North Atlantic. It was terrible news for Violet because she had already lost another brother in 1900 during the Boer War in South Africa.
