Scope and Content

under the Oxford Improvement Act 1771 a Market Committee of 6 University and 6 City members was formed which purchased land and built a new covered market between 1772-1774 [see Victoria County History of Oxfordshire volume IV pp 307-9]; from 1865 general meetings of the Market Committee became rare often only held once or twice a year and after August 1871 detailed business seems to have been undertaken in monthly meetings of a small group of committee members and various subcommittees; from Nov 1889 full responsibility for the covered market was transferred to the City Council's Markets and Fairs Committee [see for minutes after 1887]
