the City Council and University along with incumbents of certain parishes were appointed joint trustees for rebuilding Folly Bridge under an Act of 1815 [55 Geo III c94]; the Act specifically permitted the demolition and rebuilding of the bridge and empowered the trustees to raise money by letting the tolls and securing mortgages; under a further Act of 1834 Oxfordshire and Berkshire Justices of the Peace were added to the lists of Trustees; the Act contained additional provisions to protect the gas lighting and Oxford City Waterworks
Note on legal papers and correspondence: a significant amount of legal papers and correspondence for the building of the bridge, letting of tolls and so forth has survived; nearly every item was labelled and referenced either by the original keepers or when the records were catalogued later; in most cases the original sequences of documents have been retained; as a result there appears to be a considerable overlap in the contents of many series and some documents may appear out of sequence; series titles give an idea of key correspondence threads and subjects
