Administrative / Biographical History

Captain John W. Howard (b 1917) was educated at Gresham's School and Magdalene College, Cambridge, taking the post of district officer, Kenya, 1939. He served in the 5th Battalion, King's African Rifles, Kenya, Somalia, Abyssinia and Madagascar, 1940-1944. He was supervisor, colonial service courses, Cambridge, 1951-1953, senior district commissioner, Kenya, 1957, and executive officer, African land development, from the same year. He was Chairman of the Land Development and Settlement Board, 1962-1963, temporary Principal, D.T.C., 1963 and Overseas Development Ministry, 1964.
