Oxford City Technical School was located in Castle Street on the site of the old Blue Coat School for Boys and opened in 1894. The school started as the Oxford School of Art in 1865, but was renamed the Oxford City Technical School when management of the school was taken over by the Oxford City Councils's Technical Instruction Committee in 1891. The St Ebbe's site was used as both a day school and offered evening classes. In 1921 it was renamed the Municipal Secondary School for Boys, though current girls were allowed to remain for another two years. In 1934 the school merged with the Central Elementary School (please see S208/4 for records of this school) to form Southfield Grammar School (please see S75/8 for records of this school).
The Castle Street site was not large enough to provide all technical instruction, so classes were taught on a number of sites around Oxford, including the East Oxford Branch in St Clements (please see S198/6 for records of this school.)
Elements of the Technical School stayed separate from the Municipal Secondary School and remained in Castle Street. In 1934 they merged with the School of Art to form the School of Technology, Art and Commerce (please see S200/5 for records of this school), that became Oxford Polytechnic, now Oxford Brookes.
The records were transferred from Oxfordshire Studies or deposited as Acc 3364 in January 1992 and as part of Acc 5184 in August 2003. Catalogued by Alison Smith in October 2021 with additions in February 2023.
