Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
George Duncan Paterson was a partner in the printing and stationers firm of Murdoch and Paterson of 275 Blackness Road and Commercial Street, Dundee. In his spare time he was an amateur historian and genealogist and had a world reputation as an expert in the history of family names. Educated in Dundee at the High School, he was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1922, but does not seem to have published any of his work in their official proceedings. His hobbies included breeding of West Highland Terriers and singing with the Dundee Choral Union. While returning from a choir practice in January 1943 he collapsed and died on a tramcar in the city centre.
