Scope and Content

Comprises the journals of Mountstuart Elphinstone. They begin with his acceptance to Fort William College, his appointment as Assistant to the Resident of Poona and his journey there. They contain details of Elphinstone’s life in India, spanning over 30 years, including his part in the Battle of Adgaon and the siege of Gawlior [Mss Eur F88/360], a full account of his expedition to Kabul [Mss Eur F88/362], his life in India as Governor of Bombay, and his life in England upon his return from India, after an absence of 32 years. The journals increasingly refer and comment on the literature he reads and studies. There is an index to the journals [Mss Eur F88/25] which mostly refers to the literature Elphinstone read and studied. Elphinstone frequently made trips to the Continent and around Britain after his return from India. This series also contains notes, plans, routes and other papers regarding these trips and a collection of visiting cards left for him [Mss Eur F88/50-53]
