Scope and Content

Comprises volumes of private and semi-official letters Mountstuart Elphinstone received during his Commissionership of the Deccan (1818-1819) and his Governorship of Bombay (1819-1827). Chiefly on Indian affairs, correspondents include Sir Evan Nepean, Sir Charles Colville, Francis Warden, Captain Henry Dundas Robertson, Captain James Grant [Duff], William Chaplin, Major John Briggs, AB McDonell and Charles James, General Theophilus Pritzler and Sir Lionel Smith. There is also a mixture of working papers, notes, etc. chiefly on Indian affairs
