Scope and Content

A medical student's notebook, [?1860s], containing mostly medical notes and medicinal recipes.
The volume includes notes on scarlet fever (f. 30 recto-verso), on typhoid fever, taken mostly from Thomas Hawkes Tanner's Manual of the Practice of Medicine (see 5th edn (London, 1965), pp. 166-171) (ff. 35 verso-38 verso), and on the pelvic bones and female regenerative organs, taken from Fleetwood Churchill's On the Theory and Practice of Midwifery (see 3rd edn (London and Dublin, 1855), pp. 2-52 passim) (ff. 40 verso-62); as well as general 'Notes on Clinical Surgery', concerning bone fractures and various other conditions, with repeated references to Drs Cameron and Morton (ff. 67-79). Also included are medicinal recipes for stimulants, tonics, alteratives and antacids (ff. 32 verso-34 verso); extracts from the 'Royal Free Hospital Pharmacopoe[i]a' (ff. 63-66 verso, Latin); and horse and cattle medicines (ff. 25-28).
