Administrative / Biographical History

The Printmakers Council started organising exhibitions for their members in 1966. Less than a year after they were founded the Arts Council allocated them a grant of £250 (AGM 23 March 1966) and an exhibition subcommittee was formed. At the second AGM in 1967 Michael Rothenstein said that he felt that the AAD/2015/8 had two roles firstly as a service organisation providing information on materials, equipment, training and galleries and secondly as an exhibiting society.

The first exhibition was at the Edinburgh Festival in August 1966, this was a followed by a London show at the Grabowski gallery and then an ambitious exhibition at the AAA Galleries in New York. No catalogue was produced for the AAA exhibition although a poster was designed [a list of exhibitors is included in the AGM papers].

Travelling exhibitions were organised by Heather Hawkins between 1967 and 1973 who received an honorarium of £8 per exhibition. There are very few records of this exhibitions. The travelling exhibitions were discontinued due to lack of sales.

The Printmakers Council had residencies at a number of galleries where they showed group and individual members' works. These included OUP (Oxford University Press) gallery in Dover Street c. 1972-1975; New Frames Beak Street 1981-1982 and Conway Hall 1995.

The Printmakers Council took over the organisation of the 'Miniprint' [British International Miniature] touring exhibition in 2009.

Exhibitions were normally organised by members of the committee together with local representatives or gallery owners.
