Administrative / Biographical History
Lords Lieutenant are the representatives of the Crown for each county in the United Kingdom, appointed by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister. From its earliest days, the Lord Lieutenancy has been closely associated with the Magistracy. The Lord Lieutenant also became responsible for the organization of all royal visits to the county. The Lord Lieutenant appoints a group of Deputy Lieutenants, and a Vice Lord Lieutenant is selected from among these Deputies. Following local government reorganization in 1974, the Lord Lieutenancy of West Glamorgan was created. Colonel James Vaughan Williams (1912-1994) was Lord Lieutenant between 1974 and 1987. Following him, Sir Michael Llewellyn (1908-1994) took the position. Robert Cameron Hastie (b. 1933) has been the Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan since 1995.
