Scope and Content

Correspondence and documents related to the maintenance and running of a number of missionary schools established in Italy and British Guyana. The documents include accounts of the expenses of running the schools and ownership or renting of school buildings in Italy and of the trusteeship of the mission house in Guyana. Much of the Guyana correspondence gives a general overview of the missionary activity in the colony. Also included are exam results and transcripts of services given. The correspondence also relates to the general maintenance of the schools, for example several letters are concerned with the salaries and pensions of teachers, or the hiring and firing of them. Other letters testify to the impact of the First World War on the schools, detailing the problems with getting money from Britain to Italy during this time. Some letters from the teachers give accounts of the progress of the schools and their pupils, as well as their requirements. The collection gives a good overview of the general running of such schools.
