Scope and Content

i. 28 December 1839 - Berne - Enquires about box for him; plants from Mr. Campbell from Edinburgh and other parcels. Colonel Brown. Publications. Will be sending box of plants etc. for Edwards and others. Asks for Siberian Mica. Publications.

ii. 22 December 1842 - Berne - Has sent 2 boxes of plants, other objects ... and books. Enclosure fro William Hooker. Three sets of Rugel's plants, etc. Publications. M. Gopet of Jersey now here (Berne)? Dr. Brunner's enclosure ... "I wish with all my heart he was still in Senegal ..." Meissner's Polygonum. Bentham's Leguminosae.

iii. 13 February 1843 - Berne - Publications. Exotic shells. Dr. Brunner - "I shall have no peace ..." Has paid Dr. Gardner.

iv. 7 March 1843 - Berne - Publications. Collector who went to New Zealand. Zollinger. Java plants. "I have little faith in Zollinger." Lists books. Linden's Columbian plants. Rugel's N. American plants.

v. 8 June 1843 - Berne - Establishment of Horticultural Society (Berne). Wants N. Zealand collection. Rugel's plants expected in c. 10 days " ... he is now in Florida." Buckley's plants. Schaerer's Lichens.

vi. 14 August 1843 - Berne - Parcels to W.P., Ober, Wirtgen at Coblenz, M. Boisser. Rugel in Florida is sending " ... most interesting plants", orchids, palms, etc. S. is occupied at present with his Tennessee plants ... "far superior to Dr. Buckley's." Shells. Publications.

vii. 15 April 1844 - Berne - Publications. Schaerer's plants. Warns W.P. to be on his guard as Dr. Brunner intends to visit England. Proposed new Botanical garden in Berne - R.J.S. offered Botanical chair.

viii. 2 October 1845 - Barton, Preston - Publications to be sent to Berne. (Note by W.P. of reply.)
