Scope and Content

Edward Schroeder Prior RA FSA (1852-1932) was an influential British architect and the author of many books, including A History of Gothic Art in England (1900) and, with Arthur Gardener, An Account of Medieval Figural-Sculpture in England (1912). He helped to establish the Arts and Crafts movement and the Art Workers Guild and, while Slade Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge University, he founded the School of Architecture there.

The collection comprises two volumes of photographs as well as letters to E.S. Prior from G. Montague Benton, Alfred Fisher, Arthur Gardner, Philip Nelson, V.B. Redstone and Aylmer Vallance.

Acquisition Information

Presented to the Society by Julian W.S. Litten PhD, FSA in December 2004. The volumes came into his possession through the estate of John Templar, the sole grandchild of E.S. Prior.
