Administrative / Biographical History

David Wilson was born on 12 May 1943 and died on 17 August 2008. He was brought up in Cotton Road, Dundee. He loved working with sailing vessels and had his own converted lifeboat in Tayport for many years. He was employed by Dundee Harbour Trust to work on various harbour floating craft, but mainly on harbour tugs. He was the youngest skipper of the "Castlecraig" tug. After leaving Forth Ports, Mr Wilson worked for R.G.I.T. in Dundee, training offshore personnel in seamanship and drop type lifeboats. Mr Wilson was a skipper on some of the ships built by the Caledon Shipbuilding Company, and compiled scrapbooks relating to the company's ships and the port of Dundee in general. The company was founded in 1874 by W.B. Thompson, and was renamed the Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Company in 1896. It merged with Henry Robb of Leith in 1968 to form Robb Caledon Shipbuilding Limited. Operations ceased in Dundee in 1981.
