Scope and Content

Private diary of William Holman Hunt kept during his first stay in the Middle East. The Diary fills folios 1-94v; folios 14-15, 17-30 and 32-65 (parts of April-October) have been torn out, although on many pages writing survives near the stitching. Folios 95-129v, are blank, save for folios 111-12, 118-20, which contain entries in English and Italian (written in the reverse direction from the main entries) and have been partly torn out, although much writing survives on all five near the stitching. On the front and back of the binding are pasted pieces of paper containing brief subject headings to some of the entries and Holman married Fanny [Waugh] 1866, Holman died 1910, We married 1875 [i.e. his second wife Edith Waugh, Fanny's sister] and Belongs to Hilary [his son by his second wife].
