Scope and Content

Correspondence: letters and papers from various medical institutions including correspondence relating to Robert Buist, 1957-1987. Student Records: lecture notes taken by medical, nursing students and related items, 1908-1964. Financial Records: accounts and receipts from various medical institutions, 1897-1948. Newspaper Cuttings: collection of death notices, reports of staff appointments and various articles relating to local hospitals and medicine, 1897-2007. Publications: items relating to graduation ceremonies and publications relating to the history of dialysis and Forfarshire Sick Hospital, 1972-2009. Plans and Developments: information regarding land acquisition, alterations and fire safety pertaining to various medical institutions, 1928-1991. Photographs and Images: photographs of plaques, staff and patients from DRI and caricatures of Doctors, c 1900- 1987. Commemorative Material: DRI centenary celebrations and the Queen's visit to Dundee, 1955, 1998

Administrative / Biographical History

Graham Lowe was born in Dundee in 1952. Both his parents were doctors; his father was a consultant physician at Dundee Royal Infirmary and his mother worked in the chest unit based in Constitution Road. Dr Lowe began studying medicine in 1970 at the University of Dundee and after graduating he worked in various branches of medicine including orthopaedics and pathology. In 1990 Dr Lowe became a consultant in dermatology at Ninewells Hospital where he worked until his retirement in 2010. In 2005 Dr Lowe was invited to assume the role of Honorary Curator of Tayside Medical History Museum. Dr Lowe has encouraged and received donations from staff working throughout Tayside and has organised many exhibitions.

The exact details of how the hospital material came to be passed onto the Medical Museum are not known. The Jennifer Barnes material was handed in by her family after her death.
