Scope and Content

Consular correspondence addressed to Viscount Mount Stuart, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Turin, his Secretary (D.G. Jacmar) and the chargé d'affaires (William Deane Poyntz) mainly from John Birkbeck, Consul at Nice (numbers 1-225 passim, December 1779 - March 1783), and John Udny, Consul at Leghorn (numbers 241-277, December 1779 - October 1782). There are also numerous enclosures in English, French, and Italian, among which are intelligence reports from the ports of France and Spain. Included are letters and papers of : 

  • Baron le Clerc, Nice (numbers 226-229, 1782);
  • Francis Fowler, Nice (numbers 230-236, 1782);
  • Clement Richardson, Cagliari (number 237, 1780);
  • James Traill, Tunis (number 238, 1780);
  • Michele Ciarella, Cagliari (numbers 239-240, December 1781 - January 1782).
