During the Second World War, the Government encouraged the salvage and collection of unwanted paper for recycling to help in the war effort. The Machynlleth branch of the Women's Voluntary Service organised collections of papers in the area. Prior to pulping, the papers were screened for possible historical importance, and as a result many of the papers collected were retained and later deposited at the National Library. These include records, 1858-1927, of Machynlleth Urban District Council, the Owain Glyndwr Institute, and the Machynlleth Poor Law Union.

Arranged in chronological order, into the following: correspondence from the clerks' office; rate books; rate books for the poor law; overseer's book of receipts and payments; orders and amendments under the local government act; papers relating to the local government elections; letter book; bye-laws; correspondence relating to public health act; papers relating to appointment of officials; papers relating to salaries under housing and town planning act; reports of surveyor; Machynlleth Waterworks; Dovey fishery papers; papers relating to Royal visits; papers relating to roads and streets; Machynlleth sewerage schemes; library papers; papers relating to the telephone; papers relating to Machynlleth town hall; papers relating to the Cambrian resorts association; papers labelled Castlereagh Tower; papers relating to markets and fairs; papers labelled fire brigade; Machynlleth isolation hospital; Machynlleth Owain Glyndwr Institute; Machynlleth Petty Sessions; papers relating to the billeting of troops; papers relating to coal emergencies; minute book of an association of farmers; account book in form of a diary.
