Scope and Content

This sub-collection contains material which relates to Oppé's professional activities in regard to surveying and advising the following institutional and private collections:

-the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa

-the Groult collection, Paris

-the Cecil Higgins Gallery, Bedford

Administrative / Biographical History

As part of his broader career as an art historian, Oppé was often invited to act in an advisory capacity for several public and private collections. This ranged from offering an opinion on the attribution of individual works of art to assisting with the development of particular collections. The most notable work of this kind he undertook was for the National Gallery of Canada, for whom he bought or recommended a large amount of works for their collection between 1937-1957.
