The files in this series have been organised chronologically. They were originally stored throughout his papers in no particular order, and were brought together here during cataloguing.

After graduating from New College, Oxford, in 1901, Oppé pursued an academic career, specialising in ancient Greek culture, myth and art. Yet, in 1905, he changed direction and embarked on a career in the Board of Education where he worked until his retirement in 1938. Alongside this work he began to pursue his interest in art history, building a network of correspondents and participating in public debate on various related matters. After his retirement, he continued to write books on art, and also reprised some earlier interests in creative writing.
