Scope and Content

Photocopies of notebooks compiled by John P. Ingram, at one time chief reporter and shipping correspondent of the Dundee Courier and Evening Telegraph. They consists of notes on ships built in Dundee, Arbroath, Perth and Fife, their subsequent history, builders, owners, masters etc., arranged topographically and chronologically and in some cases by subject. Some notebooks include notes on local history and personalities. The notebooks cover the period 1767-1978. MS 73/1-8 Gives details and general information on type, tonnage, builders, masters and owners of vessels, listed chronologically. MS 73/9-38 Gives details of type, tonnage, builders, and owners of the vessels, arranged alphabetically, including some duplication of that in MS 73/1-8; also notes on a wide variety of topics relating to shipping and local history. Administrative / Biographical History

John P Ingram was educated at the Morgan Academy, Dundee. He joined the editorial staff of the People's Journal in 1927, moving the following year to The Courier and The Evening Telegraph where he remained until his retirement in 1975, with a brief interlude in the navy during the Second World War. He was particularly interested in shipping, and built up an extensive collection of notebooks on the subject. He continued to write regular shipping articles for the Dundee newspapers until his death in 1984 at the age of 74.
