Scope and Content

Many of the photographs are professionally related, comprising film studio and theatre performance prints along with portrait prints taken for publicity purposes, which span the length of Burton's career. There are also some prints of Burton taken during public engagements: since most of these were undertaken with Elizabeth Taylor during the years of their relationship, these have been included within the Family and Friends series at RWB/1/4/3. In addition there are numerous prints of the other wives and family members, and of Burton as a schoolboy and in the RAF.

There is some overlap between this series and Correspondence held at RWB/3, which also contains numerous photographs. The vast majority of photographs in both series are black and white prints, but they also include some colour prints, mounted photographs, enlargements and negatives.

Arrangement

The photographs have been arranged thematically into six sub-series. The grouping of Artifical Files at RWB/1/4/4 comprises prints which have been sorted and placed in labelled files by another party. These are artificial groupings, but have been maintained. Within each sub-series, the listing is chronological.

Conditions Governing Use

Some prints have been identified by a copyright stamp.
