Administrative / Biographical History

Description:

Comprises mainly professional and business correspondence along with a smaller amount of personal correspondence with family and friends. A large number of files comprise material from various agents (particularly Aaron Frosch, Burton's New York based attorney) relating to negotiations and arrangements for film projects, employment contracts, and legal and financial matters. Some theatre productions, such as Camelot and Private Lives, are also represented. In addition, the series includes copies of Burton's will and some material relating to Philip Burton's 'adoption' (or legal guardianship). There is also some material concerning articles published by Burton. Correspondents of note include Philip Burton, Peter Hall, and Daryl Zanuck. With the occasional exception, this series comprises letters and telegrams received by Burton.

There is some overlap between this series and Photographs at RWB/1/4 as numerous correspondence files comprise prints and photocopies of prints, both of productions and of family and friends.

Arrangement

This series largely comprises correspondence files removed from Burton's filing cabinet at his residence in Celigny. The files have been labelled by Burton and these labels have been retained in the title field of the item entries. These items have been grouped under 'Original Files' at RWB/1/2/1; this grouping reflects both Burton's own filing system and his ordering of the records within it. RWB/1/2/1/66-75 comprise files created by Burton but not found within his filing system. Other correspondence files which have been organized and labelled (probably by Sally Burton) after Burton's death appear at RWB/1/2/2. RWB/1/2/3 comprises various miscellanea (usually single items).
