Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Registry is part of the Academic Support Division (ASD) of the University's Central Administration (CA). After the Universities (Scotland) Act of 1858 the Registrar was responsible for the annual matriculation (registration) and enrolment of students and the maintenance of the records of all students and graduates of the University. The Registry is also responsible for examination arrangements, the distribution of grant and loan cheques, the collection of tuition fees, student financial aid and the organisation of graduations. Modern matriculations grew from the system set up by Senate in 1843 to regulate use of the Library although matriculation did not become compulsory until 1859, following the passing of the 1858 Act. From 1858-1944, the Registrar was the most senior administrative officer in the University. When the Secretary of Court became a full-time post in 1944 it was combined with the post of Registrar. The positions were separated again in 1983. In 1996, the post of Registrar ceased to exist, the Head of Registry undertaking day to day administration of the Registry although ultimate responsibility for the functions rests with the Secretary of Court.
