Scope and Content

Included within this group are different series comprising correspondence of the family members concerned. Although the political offices held by different family members and their range of political interests and activities have given a particular subject focus, the collection also includes long runs of family and domestic correspondence, and contains papers relating to the estates and property.

Full biographical details about the different family members and descriptions of the individual sub-groups of political and associated papers are found under their separate references. Due to the size of this collection the sections are delivered separately on the Manuscripts Online Catalogue.

Ne C 14730-15406 The final miscellaneous series of the Newcastle Correspondence Collection is largely concerned with genealogy, and particularly with the 4th Duke's efforts to trace the early history of the Clintons. The Collection originally held a series of autograph letters of famous people, purchased by the 5th Duke 1859-1862. These are now represented in the Collection by surrogate copies.

Ne C 15404-6 Also present in the final section are three volumes of the 16th-17th centuries, comprising letter books of John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare and a commonplace book of John Holles, 2nd Earl of Clare.

Administrative / Biographical History

The family members whose political and personal papers form the bulk of the Newcastle Correspondence collections include Henry Pelham (1696-1754), brother of Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle under Lyne and father-in-law of the 2nd; Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle under Lyne (1720-1794); his grandson Henry, the 4th Duke (1785-1851 and his son Henry, 5th Duke (1811-1864).

There are also smaller groups of papers of General Sir Henry Clinton (1738-1795), cousin of the 2nd Duke, and of two members of the Wriothesley family, Henry, 3rd Earl of Southampton (1573-1624) and his grand-daughter Lady Rachel Russell (née Wriothesley 1636-1723), whose relationship to the Pelham-Clintons is not clear.
