Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
On the death of George Gregory in 1860 the Manor contents were finally inherited by the renamed Welby-Gregorys of Denton.
The house, however, followed an earlier entail and was inherited by John Sherwin (1803-1869). A very distant relative and the family solicitor, John Sherwin became known as John Sherwin Gregory.
John Sherwin Gregory was born in 1804 at Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. He married Catherine Holden, daughter of Robert Holden and Mary Anne Drury Lowe, in 1829. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Nottinghamshire.
John Sherwin Gregory died in 1869 at St. George Hanover Square, London. His wife Catherine (b.1806) held the estate at Harlaxton until she died in 1892. Mrs Sherwin Gregory enjoyed supporting the local church and school.
