The Unemployment Assistance Board was set up in 1935, as a result of the Unemployment Insurance Act 1934, to administer means-tested support for the unemployed. It was organised into regions, areas and local districts, staffed by civil servants. The Board was abolished when assistance was replaced by Unemployment Benefit in 1948. The Wales region organised eisteddfod events in Cardiff in 1938 and 1939. The Cardiff district ran a Sports and Social Club for its staff, administered by a committee, arranging athletic and social events.
