Scope and Content

Estate, legal, financial, family and inerhitance records primarily relating to Robert and Thomas Forster of Lucker and Ammonside Law near Bamburgh, Northumberland. The Forster family had originally been major landholders at Adderstone, and had been governors of Bamburgh Castle since the 12th century. The family's fortunes declined after the bancruptcy of William (d1700) and the involvement of Sir Thomas in the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. Julia Pratt Forster of Adderstone married Archibald Buchanan of Catrine in 1847, at which point Adderstone estate was sold. Their daughter Julia Buchanan married Sir Henry Gibson-Craig in 1870.
