Scope and Content

The John Milner Collection - Afan Valley Project

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1980 John Ellerton, owner of a newly-built narrow-gauge railway in France decided to relocate to the UK. He identified the Afan Valley as a suitable location, as it still had its trackbed in place and had its eyes on tourism. Working with the West Glamorgan planning officer at the time, preparations were progressing rapidly, until Mr Ellerton left to work on a project overseas, leaving Milner Engineering Chester Ltd. to work on the Afan Valley project. In 1984 Mr Ellerton returned to the UK and decided to abandon the Afan Valley project in favour of purchasing and rebuilding the Fairbourne Railway near Dolgellau.
