Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Tiata Fahodzi is a theatre company founded in 1997 by Femi Elufowoju, jr, who was its artistic director until 2010. The name derives from the Yoruba and Twi languages of West Africa and translates as "theatre of the emancipated". The aim of the company is to "convey, celebrate and challenge the cultural experiences of Africans living in the United Kingdom". The company commissions and develops new writing as well as reinterpreting African and European classics. It stages one major production each year as well as presenting new, emerging talent through initiatives such Tiata Delights, a festival of playreadings and performances of new writing.
