Administrative / Biographical History

In the early 1920's James David Paterson and his wife moved from Arbroath to India where he became manager of the Gourepore Jute Mill and was very well respected by his staff. While in India the Paterson's had three children, James, Ian and Elfriede.

Acquisition Information

The depositor was Elfriede Paterson's neighbour; who came into possession of the items after Dr Paterson died; apparently Dr Paterson had been agreeable to an earlier suggestion that the items be deposited in the University of Dundee.

Custodial History

The items were accumulated by the Paterson family while in India and eventually were brought back to the United Kingdom where they were gathered by Dr Elfriede Paterson, the daughter of James Paterson.
