'Bygone Punishments'

In the Preface to the book William Andrews (1848-1908) says he began investigating the history of obsolete punishments in the 1870s and began to write articles for newspapers and magazines. In 1881 he published Punishments in the Olden Time" and in 1890 was published Old Time Punishments: both works were well received by the press and the public alike. In the 1890s he contributed to Rev. Canon Erskine's Parish Magazine a series of articles called "Public Punishments of the Past" and these were re-written to form Bygone Punishments which was published in 1899 which he offered as his final word on the subject.

As such it features chapters on hanging, hanging, drawing and quatering, pressing, drowning, beheading, the Halifax Gibbet, branding, the pillory, the Scottish Maiden, the stocks, the drunkard's cloak, whipping-posts, the ducking stool, the Scold's Bridle and riding the stang.
