Arthur Tedder was born in Glenguin, Stirlingshire in 1890. He was the son of Sir Arthur John Tedder and was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He served in the Royal Flying Corps during World War One and thereafter pursued a career in the air forces which eventually saw him becoming commander of the RAF Far Eastern Forces in the 1930s. During World War Two he commanded allied air operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa and was Promoted to Air Marshal. He was appointed Deputy Supreme Allied Commander during the later stages of the War and was British signatory to the (second) Act of Military Surrender by Germany in Berlin in May 1945. He was knighted in 1942 and ennobled in 1946. From 1946 until 1950 he served as Chief of the Air Staff. In 1951 he was invited to chair the Royal Commission on University Education in Dundee which led to the creation of Queen's College, Dundee. Arthur Tedder died in 1967 and was succeeded as Baron Tedder, by his son Professor John M. Tedder who was Roscoe Professor of Chemistry, University of Dundee and later Purdie Professor of Chemistry, University of St. Andrews.
