One copy of a box list of the personal paper of Mary Evans, compiled by the history of nursing society

A certificate from the Mayor of Sale congratulating Evans for her services in the Second World War - 8 Jun 1946

A “Good Luck” card from Evans’ family which was sent to Evans before her nursing exams. The card has a cartoon of a soldier loading a missile, marked “effort” into a cannon marked “examination.” - c.1943

Correspondence and administrative documents relating to the termination of Evans’ contract with the Shrewsbury Hospital Group due to illness in 1968 and the subsequent sick pay she received

Programme from the Ashton-on-Mersey Secondary School for Girls. A prize appears to have been awarded to a family member of Evans - 16 Jul 1959

Administrative / Biographical History

Mary Baxter (nee Evans) was born in Greater Manchester on 19 Mar 1915. She gained her first qualification as a nurse in c.1940 in Greater Manchester. She registered as a nurse in Tasmania, Australia in 1941 and saw war time service in India and Egypt before returning to Manchester to train as a midwife at St. Mary’s Hospital, Newton Heath in 1946. In 1950, Evans travelled to Australia again to work as a nurse and she returned to Manchester in 1951 where she subsequently trained as health visitor. She retired from nursing and health visitor practice in 1969 due to ill health. Mary Baxter passed away in 1999.
