Scope and Content

Publications that would have been used by Mary Evans as part of her nursing, health visitor and midwifery work. File Contains:

Printed copy of the “Children Act, 1948” (11 & 12 George VI. C. 43.) At the top is written “M. Evans” with an address beneath.

“The Sixty-Fifth Annual Report of the Manchester, Salford and District Branch of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children”. A leaflet outlining the society’s activities during 1957 and

1958.

“Teaching Guide – Menstrual Education” by the Department of Education. - c. 1950s

“Heinz Strained Foods and Junior Foods for Infant Feeding and Special Diets.” A copy of a pamphlet produced by Heinz regarding specialised food products for infants and children - c. 1950s

“So Much in Love,” by Caroline Brown, published by the Mother’s Union. This leaflet contains information and guidance relating to romantic relationships, engagement and marriage.

“Herefordshire County Council Health Services Handbook.” A leaflet guide to the health services in Hertfordshire - c. 1950s

“How We Grow Up” from the Central Council for Health Education. A leaflet concerning puberty and reproduction which appears to be aimed at children - c. 1950s

“For Someone Else’s Daughter,” produced by the British Broadcasting Company. This is a collection of transcribed speeches given by various broadcasters as part of women’s hour on BBC Radio Four.

“Junior Miss,” by Yardly. A magazine aimed at teenage girls which was produced by the cosmetics company, Yardly. Contains articles on topics such as skincare and homemaking - c. 1960s

“Your Contented Baby” produced by General Milk Products. A guide for new parents that also contains advertising for milk products - c. 1950s

“Motherhood,” seventh edition by Cow and Gate. A guide for new parents that contains advertising for Cow and Gate products - c.1950s

“Advice to Parents and Guardians on the Health of the Child,” City of Manchester Health Department. A leaflet containing information about common childhood illnesses -May 1953

“From Milk to Mixed Diet,” by the Heinz Company. A guide to feeding infants aimed at new parents - c.1950s

“Mental Breakdown: A Guide for the Family,” the National Association for Mental Health. A guide for family members of someone suffering from mental illness. c.1950s

“Mental Disorder” by C.H. Rolf. A pamphlet produced by the National Association for Mental Health regarding legislation relating to mental health. Evans has written her name at address on the front cover -1957

“Baby and You,” A guide to pregnancy and raising a baby, produced by the Chas. H. Phillips Chemical Company Ltd. The pamphlet contains lots of advertising for the company’s laxative products. The pamphlet contains several annotations and corrections made by Evans - c.1950s

“The Baby Book for Home Confinements,” a guide for expecting mothers which would have been supplied by midwives. - c. 1950s

“Santogen in Nursing Practice” by Genatosan Limited. An information leaflet about the vitamin supplement ‘Santogen.’ – c. 1950s

“Sickness Benefit,” from the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance. An informational leaflet regarding national entitlement to sick pay - May 1958

“Pneumoconiosis (Silicosis, Asbestosis, etc.) and Byssinosis” from the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance. An informational leaflet regarding the national insurance (industrial injuries) acts - Jan 1957

“The Deaf in Britain,” from the National Institute of the Deaf. An information booklet about hearing impairment. - C. 1950s

Administrative / Biographical History

Mary Baxter (nee Evans) was born in Greater Manchester on 19 Mar 1915. She gained her first qualification as a nurse in c.1940 in Greater Manchester. She registered as a nurse in Tasmania, Australia in 1941 and saw war time service in India and Egypt before returning to Manchester to train as a midwife at St. Mary’s Hospital, Newton Heath in 1946. In 1950, Evans travelled to Australia again to work as a nurse and she returned to Manchester in 1951 where she subsequently trained as health visitor. She retired from nursing and health visitor practice in 1969 due to ill health. Mary Baxter passed away in 1999.
