The papers in this sub-group are mainly concerned with the estate of John Lane Oldham, who died in 1876. There are some documents belonging to his father, W.E. Oldham, which are predominantly financial in nature, such as account books, bills, receipts, and bankruptcy papers. John Lane's own papers are also financial in nature and include personal account books, details of his ownership of two cotton mills and other buildings around Thomas St and Cooper St, Stockport (and the various rents and mortgages connected with them), receipts, bills, and letters to his solicitors.
The other half of these documents is concerned with events after John Lane's death, and the attempts by his executors, John Bagshaw and John Haswell, to effect a settlement of his estate, for which they were also trustees.
Thus there are also files of correspondence between the two executors, capital accounts of the estate, accounts with the beneficiaries of the estate, various receipts and bills, genealogical papers such as certificates of birth, marriage and death, deeds relating to the ownership of the mills, documents relating to the shares owned by J. L. Oldham, and papers concerning the administration and sale of the cotton mills.
